The Thanumalayan Temple is of importance to both Shaivaite and Vaishnavite sects of Hinduism. Hindus consider visiting the temples and offering worship to deities as an important part of their routine life. The current temple was built in the 17th century and is famous for its sculptures. It was previously controlled by the Nambudiris, one of the main Namboodiri families called the Thekkumon Madam. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma in a single form called Sthanumalyam.
