Akshay Kumar’s upcoming movie Gold is based on the story of India’s first Olympic gold medal win as a free nation in 1948. India competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics in Wembley Park, London, England. 79 competitors, all men, took part in 39 events in 10 sports. It was the first time that India competed as an independent nation at the Olympic Games.
The Indian field hockey team defeated the British team to win the country’s only gold medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics. It was the country’s first Olympic gold medal since India became independent.
